PAINTING MACHINE V (The last in the series) repeatedly dips a canvas into a vat of white emulsion paint. Powered by a motor and operating on variable timers the machines inner workings are revealed through its Perspex case. The machine is switched on in the morning and turned off when the last person leaves the space. It runs quietly all day without interference. Each motor driven dip produces a new layer of paint on the canvas surface. Stalactites form along the bottom edge, time lines occur across the canvas as the volume of paint in the vat decreases. The painting will end at the point of de-installation. Although machine made, the detached canvases are never the same. They are a record of their own production and in their ability to be unique works, question notions of authenticity and authorship.
